I have known Rodney Smith since I was fourteen. He is a touchstone for me, a friend, a mentor, and someone whose work and output I have always admired. Rodney is the soul and the heartbeat of East Coast Skateboarding. He is our Skip Engblom and Jeff Ho. He helped found legendary Skate brands Shut and Zoo York, and he has played a role in the lives of countless amateur and Professional Skaters that have emerged from the Northeast. His role in my personal development on and off my Board is second to none. I am forever grateful to have met Rodney when I was just starting out in Skateboarding. His influence and inspiration helped guide me onto the path that would become my life's purpose, and he encouraged me when it mattered most to always trust in myself and my own Skating.
We've never directly worked together through all the years, but not from a lack of trying. Before I joined World Industries in the late eighties, Rodney and I discussed my riding for Shut, but it didn't work out. In the early nineties, I met with Rodney in New York to explore my becoming a part of Zoo York when it was just an idea on a desk stacked with papers, but the timing wasn't right for me. Still, we always remained in touch, and we've always kept the idea of working together on the table.
Today, some thirty-eight years since we met, Rodney and I are stoked to present Rodney Smith Designs from Street Plant. But this is only the start of a working and creative relationship celebrating the freedom, creativity, and positivity that have always driven our involvement in Skateboarding. Stay tuned; much, much more to come.
